Program & Rotations
Urology Preparation Program
During the first year of your urology residency program, the emphasis
is on general surgery. Frequently chosen electives are intensive care,
radiology, and surgical pathology. You will also rotate through organ
transplantation service.
In your second year, you'll spend four months in general surgery, and
eight months in urology.
The general surgery rotations are divided between Meriter Hospital and
St. Marys Hospital Medical Center (three months each). Each of these hospitals
is about three miles from UW Hospital, where the other rotations are based.
Urology Residency Program
Your third year is spent entirely on the UW Hospital urology service,
rotating between the urology clinic and the inpatient service. The surgical
emphasis is on endoscopic diagnosis and surgical procedures of an intermediate
level of difficulty - e.g., orchidopexy, penile prosthesis, and simple
nephrectomies.
The fourth year is divided into three-month rotations, alternating between
Meriter Hospital
and the VA Hospital, which
adjoins UW Hospital. While at the VA Hospital, you are given primary responsibility
for patient management and care. You will receive significant operative
experience as surgeon in all aspects of urology, including pediatric urology
and transurethral surgery, at the respective hospitals.
During your fifth year, the emphasis is on major operative urologic cases.
The year is again divided into three-month rotations, alternating between
UW and St. Marys Hospitals.
