Robotic-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy January 13, 2006 The University of Wisconsin currently offers a robotic assisted prostatectomy using the da Vinci® surgical machine. This method incorporates the latest advancements in robotic-assisted technology and allows the surgeon greater visualization, enhanced dexterity, precision, and superior control. Nationally roughly 20% of prostatectomies are now being done using the robotic approach. A growing number of institutions in the United States and Europe have embraced this technique.
Advantages of this approach is a shorter hospital stay, typically overnight, less risk of infection, less blood loss and transfusions, faster recovery, and quicker return to normal activities. Urinary control, maintenance of erections and cancer control are similar to the open procedure. The University of Wisconsin Department of Urology is consistently ranked among the top 30 centers in the United States by US News and World Report. It is one of the largest urology centers in the State with 14 board certified urologists and researchers who treat more than 12,000 patients annually. At the University Of Wisconsin Hospitals patients have access to a new operating room with 3 dimentional technology that takes modern robotic surgery to new levels. Surgical teams are now performing robotic surgery for prostate cancer and other diseases using this unique technology.
