Archive: Department of Surgery moves from 22 to 5 in NIH funding rankings over last 5 years

Wisconsin Health News, an online news service dedicated to health news coverage in Wisconsin, recently reported on the UW Department of Surgery’s 2013 National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding ranking, in which Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research placed the department 5th in the nation. Over the last five years, the Department of Surgery moved from No. 22 to No. 5 in NIH funding among other departments of surgery.

In its reporting, Wisconsin Health News quoted UW Hospital and Clinics CEO and President Donna Katen-Bahensky, who credited Dr. K. Craig Kent, chair of the Department of Surgery since 2008, with the rankings improvement: “Pretty remarkable,” Katen-Bahensky said at a Feb. 5 authority board meeting. “Every year, we’ve just watched him do this, and not at the expense of taking care of patients. These are researchers who teach, they do research and they take care of patients. We’re very impressed with what he’s been able to do.”
