Archive: Department of Surgery shows support for AFCH Pediatric Heart Program

In an editorial published in the Wisconsin State Journal on Sunday, July 1, 2012, K. Craig Kent, MD, Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Dr. Ellen Wald, Chairwoman of the Department of Pediatrics, responded to a June 20 article wherein a representative from Meriter Hospital questions the quality of pediatric cardiac surgery offered at American Family Children’s Hospital.

“The facts are,” Drs. Kent and Wald write “that the pediatric heart care program at AFCH offers patients experienced and highly proficient surgeons, supported by a comprehensive team and housed within a state-of-the-art facility. More than 75 open-heart operations in the last nine months have been performed with no deaths or serious complications. Dr. Anagnostopoulos, our pediatric heart surgeon, came to UW Health from a nationally renowned program at the University of California-San Francisco. He has performed hundreds of complex operations throughout his career, with exemplary results.”
