Congratulations to the multidisciplinary TAVR program at UW, which completed its 500th TAVR case on August 25th. TAVR is a minimally invasive heart procedure that is supported by faculty and staff from several divisions in our department. Since beginning in 2012, this program has continued to expand and provide great care to patients.

Members of the UW Trauma team, including faculty and staff from our department, recently trained the UW Hospital and Clinic Security team in Stop the Bleed techniques. Stop the Bleed is a nationwide program that trains participants in controlling massive bleeding during emergencies. The attached photo shows Hee Soo Jung, MD, training security team members.

This summer, the UW Surgery Doris Duke Clinical Research Continuum expanded to include an undergraduate program. The inaugural participants spent the summer working with mentors Brett Wise and Calvin Kwan from SEnSE lab, who also mentored a participant in the high school program. The undergraduate mentees gave outstanding feedback about Brett and Calvin, who went above and beyond to help provide a great summer for these students. The undergraduates thanked the entire SEnSE lab for an experience that informed their future career choices in science and medicine. Thank you to these mentors and all who worked to make this program possible!

Last July, the Michael W Oglesby Foundation held their second annual Faj Squad 5K in Dubuque, IA, and decided to gift the proceeds of the run/walk to Dr. Emily Winslow’s pancreatic cancer research. Dr. Winslow was an honorary speaker at the event and the family intends to hold more runs in the future to continue to support Dr. Winslow’s work. The family raised $5,000 and hopes to expand this run/walk and other events. Congratulations to Dr. Winslow for creating a strong program that patients and families are passionate about!
