Archive: Dr. Funk emphasizes importance of treating obesity as a disease

Luke Funk, MD, MPH, bariatric surgeon and obesity researcher, joined Channel 3 News Live at Four to discuss recent research that looked at former contestants of the weight loss competition “The Biggest Loser” and their struggles to keep pounds off. Dr. Funk emphasized the need to treat obesity like a disease, such as high blood pressure or diabetes.

“Patients need access to the entire spectrum of obesity treatments, including medicines, behavioral weight management, access to nutritionists, and in some cases bariatric surgery,” he says. “Right now, three-fourths of patients in the U.S. don’t have access to that entire spectrum of care.”

“Doctor talks about losing weight, keeping it off” aired during Live at Four on WISC-TV Channel 3 on May 4, 2016.
