Archive: Dr. King teams with computer science researchers to create virtual surgery simulator

Earlier this month, University of Wisconsin plastic surgery residents took a first look at a virtual surgery simulator that will help students practice incisions and suturing. Tim King, MD, PhD, associate professor in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, is collaborating with Eftychois Sifakis, an assistant professor of computer sciences, and Curt Cutting, an international expert in cleft lip and palate procedures, to develop the simulator. While the program is still in the early stages of development, what will make it unique will be its ability to demonstrate how real skin will react under real conditions, taking into account the different types of skin on different parts of the body and the differing bioelastic properties of skin in people of various ages.
