Lee G Wilke, MD, Associate Professor of Surgery and Director of the UW Breast Center was featured in the October issue of O, The Oprah Magazine. Dr. Wilke, a national expert on breast tumors whose practice focuses on new clinical approaches to treating breast disease, responded to a recommendation issued last year by the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force that discouraged breast self-exams (BSE).
“Many doctors feel the data supporting the recommendations is flawed,” says breast surgeon Lee Wilke, MD, director of the Breast Center at the University of Wisconsin. After conducting her own BSE study, which was published last year, Wilke concluded, “BSE can be effective for women who are dedicated to performing it.”
Dr. Wilke chairs the Concept and Protocol Review Committee for American College of Surgeons Oncology Group (ACOSOG). She is also an elected member of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and she served as the medical officer for the ACOSOG.
