Archive: Partnership between UW and Ethiopia works to improve emergency medicine in the East African nation

UW Department of Surgery Professor Girma Tefera, MD, has trained and practiced medicine in Europe and the United States for more than three decades. About 14 years ago, he decided it was time to give back to his native Ethiopia. He started by volunteering as a surgeon, and in 2009 received a grant to help restructure emergency care at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital. Since then, his volunteer program has grown. The latest issue of Quarterly, the School of Medicine and Public Health’s magazine for alumni, friends, family and students, features an article about Dr. Tefera and his work in Ethiopia.
