Archive: Patient recovers from heart failure after bariatric surgery

Iraq war veteran and father of three Keith McCarter developed a severe heart issue after returning home from his tour of duty. He needed a new heart, but a medication-induced weight issue made him ineligible for a transplant. Michael Garren, MD, a specialist in bariatric surgery and the medical director of the UW Health Medical and Surgical Weight Management Program, understood the severity of McCarter’s situation. Despite the risks associated with operating on someone with a serious heart condition, together McCarter and Dr. Garren decided to go forward with weight-loss surgery. The results were better than anyone expected.

WISC-TV Channel 3’s Dave Delozier reports on McCarter’s incredible health transformation in “Doctors at UW Health give veteran second chance at life.”
