Archive: Surgery and Biomedical Engineering Collaboration Yields Teaching Model

Dr. Jon Gould and Bob McDonald, General Surgery Residency Program Manager, submitted a project idea to the Biomedical Engineering (BME) Student Design Consortium for an inguinal hernia simulator. The Design Consortium provides students with real world design challenges in medicine and biology to resolve through innovative engineering solutions.

Dr. Gould and Bob wanted to create a model to improve medical student and resident training for repairing an inguinal hernia. Inguinal hernias are common but the repair can be difficult to learn.

Their project was selected as one the students would construct for testing. The model created by the BME students allows for the practice of open and laparoscopic surgery.
