Archive: Team Challenge: Finding a Cure for Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis

Kelli Hagan, NP, a nurse practitioner in the section of colon and rectal surgery, recalls treating a patient in clinic over a year ago and meeting his wife Amanda who was by his side at every appointment. “I never thought I would be running a half marathon with her and many other former patients and loved one’s of those with Crohn’s and Colitis,” said Hagan.

Amanda asked Kelli to join her in running the Chicago Half Marathon with the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation’s Team Challenge. Though she was hesitant, Kelli accepted the challenge.

Team Challenge is a real metaphor for the treatment of Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. There is the physical and mental demand, the daunting road in front of you, and the intimidation of asking for support. A number of UW Surgery providers participated in Team Challenge, the Crohn’s and Colitis foundation of America’s endurance training and fundraising program.

This year’s race participants, including Kelli, are:

Katie Adkins
Amanda Hall
Jason Kraemer
Jana Hughes
Becky Burris

The team will race June 8, 2013 in Chicago. “I really feel honored that I’ve been invited into this part of our patient’s lives,” added Hagan.
