Archive: Transplant surgeon and liver recipient share a bond beyond the operating room

Anthony M D’Alessandro, MD, Professor of Surgery and Medical Director of the UW Health Organ Procurement Organization and the UW Health Transplant Service Line, had no idea that when he transplanted a healthy liver into a very sick three-year-old a decade ago, the little girl would become such an important part of his life. Ali, the liver transplant recipient, is now a thriving teenager who devotes much of her free time to discussing the importance of organ donation within her community. Since her transplant at age 3, Ali has remained close to the medical staff who cared for her but she shares a special bond with Dr. D’Alessandro, a bond that landed both of them under the bright lights of a ballroom dance floor.
