Archive: UW Department of Surgery ranks No. 5 in NIH funding to US medical schools

The Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research recently published the 2013 rankings of National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding to U.S. medical schools, placing the UW-Madison Department of Surgery at No. 5 in the nation. The UW Department of Surgery has been moving steadily up the rankings in recent years, from No. 7 in 2012 and No. 11 in 2011. Furthermore, while the top four departments of surgery in the nation showed decreases in funding amounts from 2012 to 2013, the UW Department of Surgery increased its NIH funding by $1.7 million during that time.

The chart below lists the top 10 departments of surgery and their rankings in the previous two years.

NIH funding represents about 50 percent of the UW Department of Surgery’s total research dollars; additional funding comes from other federal, industry, private nonprofit and intramural sources.

Congratulations to the many investigators in the department and their support staffs.
