Archive: UW’s first Vascular Surgery resident enters her final year of training

Four years ago, Brigitte Smith, MD, became the UW’s first resident in its integrated Vascular Surgery Residency Program. This national movement to change the way hospitals train resident vascular surgeons is so new only about 35 hospitals around the country have a standalone program, and only about 13 surgeons have completed one.

Smith, now entering her final year in residency, helped set the standard for vascular surgery education at the UW by offering faculty ideas and insights on the new residency program. The Spring 2014 issue of Quarterly, SMPH’s magazine for alumni, friends, faculty and students, features a profile of Dr. Smith and her initiative to increase the number of patients who enter smoking cessation programs.
