Department Initiatives

The Department is happy to announce that Caprice Greenberg, MD, MPH, has accepted the position as Director of the Wisconsin Surgical Outcomes Research Program within the UW Department of Surgery. Dr. Greenberg will join the Department on July 1, 2011 and is available for collaboration in January 2011.

Research Update

Will Burlingham’s program project grant “Th17 autoimmunity to type V collagen in heart and lung transplant,” was funded to start on September 1, 2010. Dr. Burlingham is a co-PI on the grant, which will fund $250,000 of direct research in his lab, along with an immunopathology core (led by Jose Torrealba and assisted by Drew Roenneburg) and an animal core which will cover the cost of transgenic mice. The PI on the grant is Dr. Burlingham’s long-time collaborator, David Wilkes, at Indiana University.

Susan Thibeault was notified that her R01 “Engineering the Vocal Fold Extracellular Matrix,” received funding for 5 years. The competitive continuation has total costs of $2,847,478 and direct costs of $2,138,184.

Charles Heise was awarded a second year of funding from the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons for his project “Identification and Validation of a Diagnosis of Diverticulitis in the Outpatient Setting.” The award is from 9/1/10-8/31/11 for $50,000. Dr. Heise has collaborated on this project with Erin O’Connor, MD PGY-3 in General Surgery.
