At the Top

The complexity of creating new, destination programs in the Department can never be underestimated. Putting together the skilled team to develop the living donor liver program, took the help of Munci Kalayoglu, MD, a long term faculty member who retired to Turkey, and one of his Turkish surgeons, Yucel Yankol, MD, along with hepatologist John Rice, MD. Luis Fernandez, MD, Professor in Transplant, led the effort, and with Dr. Yankol’s help and the addition of Martin Dib, MD, Assistant Professor in Transplant, they have performed six living donor liver transplants this year. One young CrossFit enthusiast recently came to Madison – but not for last weekend’s CrossFit games. Sydney Sullivan, a teenage CrossFit champion, was recently cared for by our transplant team, who performed a living donor liver transplant. You can read the story of her journey and care at UW Health online.

Philanthropy

Last week’s Paul Davis Golf Invitational benefiting the UW Health Burn Center and the Alliance for Fire Safety was a success, raising over $70,000 and engaging over 130 participants, including several Department of Surgery members who golfed for the cause.
