Heather Neuman, MD, MS, recently earned 2nd percentile for her inaugural R01 grant application, “Increasing Socioeconomically Disadvantaged Patients’ Engagement in Breast Cancer Surgery Decision Making through a Shared Decision Making Intervention.” Congratulations on a great score; reaching this milestone in a biomedical research career is a great achievement.

Susan Thibeault, PhD, won a Microbiome Initiative Award from the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Office of the Chancellor and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education (VCRGE). This award will support her project, “Upper Airway Microbiome: Principles for Mucosal Biology in Health and Disease.” The microbiome initiative is a strategic initiatives launched by VCRGE to seed research that is likely to galvanize the UW’s research community and to position UW-Madison faculty to be more competitive when applying for federal funding in specific research areas. Thirteen projects were funded across campus. Congratulations, Susan!

Jonathan Kohler, MD, recently introduced Love WI, a nonprofit story-telling organization, to UW Health. This connection led to a series of video features of AFCH patients that are rolling out this summer. Watch the first video about Jacob, a young cancer patient.

Please join me in welcoming our new residents and fellows joining our department this summer. We’re looking forward to working with a talented group of trainees.
