At the Top

Congratulations to John Russell, PhD, who received a 7th percentile on his NIH R01. Dr. Russell is an associate scientist in the Department of Surgery, collaborating with Nadine Connor, PhD, who is a co-investigator on the grant titled “Treatment of functional deficits in tongue muscles induced by radiation and chemoradiation treatment.” This grant was Dr. Russell’s first submission to NIH. Wow! One for one!!

We received a copy of a letter to Deans Golden and Petty from Erik Ranheim, MD, PhD, the chair of the Educational Policy and Curriculum Committee for UWSMPH. This past year, the surgery clerkship experienced a dip in student evaluations, particularly around fostering a healthy work environment. Dr. Ranheim credited the extraordinary dedication of Ann O’Rourke, MD, for addressing the issue and creating an improvement plan, stating that she and her department leadership (Mike Bentz, MD) are a credit to our institution. We agree!

Amir Ali Rahnemai Azar, MD, will join Surgical Oncology as their inaugural fellow in July 2017. Dr. Azar joins us after completing a residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and a transplant fellowship at the University of Washington.
