New Faculty

Luke Funk will join the Department of Surgery, Division of General Surgery, as an Assistant Professor (CHS) on September 1, 2013. He will develop a clinical program primarily at the William S. Middleton Veterans Administration Hospital that focuses on minimally invasive and general surgery. Working with the health services research group at the VAH, he will develop an outcomes research program studying surgical outcomes. Dr. Funk received his MD from Loyola University and completed his residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, during which time he received his MPH from Harvard School of Public Health. He is currently completing a minimally invasive surgery fellowship at Ohio State University.


The SMPH CHS Track Appointments and Promotions Committee unanimously endorsed the department’s recommendation that Diane Heatley be promoted to the rank of Professor (CHS).

Elizabeth Sisk and Mike Sloan were unanimously promoted to the rank of Associate Professor (CT) by the SMPH Clinician Teacher Track Appointments and Promotions Committee.


Carla Pugh’s US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command grant “Psycho-Motor and Error Enabled Simulations Modeling Vulnerable Skills in the Pre-Mastery Phase—Medical Practice Initiative Procedural Skill Decay and Maintenance” arrived this week. The award was for $1,999,999 for work performed March 13, 2013 through March 12, 2016. Congratulations!


Dixon Kaufman will serve on the World Transplant Congress 2014 International Advisory Committee and Chair of the Specialty Group – Renal. He will be responsible for developing programs within this specialty.

Becky Sippel will join the Editorial Board of the Annals of Surgical Oncology reviewing papers from the American Association of Endocrine Surgery.
