At the Top

Marquita Decker, 3rd year General Surgery resident, was selected to receive a US Fulbright Student Program Award for 2013-2014. The award will support research on societal and patient-centered cost-effectiveness of mammographic breast cancer screening through an international collaboration between UW and Erasmus University in Rotterdam, Netherlands.


Shakti Goel, a Research Associate working with K. Craig Kent and Lian Guo, PhD submitted a poster in WARF’s inaugural Discovery Challenge describing a new use of insulin to treat narrowed arteries. He now can add a pending U.S. patent application and “inventor” to his resume. Read more here.

Josh Mezrich’s review article in the April 27 edition of Transplantation and the accompanying cover art came during the same week that Dr. Mezrich’s brother, Ben, gave grand rounds on his writing journey. Ben asked Josh how much he was paid to have his work on the cover of a prestigious journal. Josh was embarrassed to admit how much he had paid to have color art on the cover of a journal. Thanks to all mentors of undergraduate students who participated in the 15th annual Undergraduate Symposium on April 18, 2013. Peter Geiger, Senior Research Specialist (Greg Kennedy’s lab), Elizabeth Levendoski, PhD (Susan Thibeault’s lab), Sam Gubbels, and Michael Hammer, PhD all worked with students to prepare professional quality work for exhibit.


Jim Maloney was appointed by the Veterans Administration National Surgery Office to the Transplant Surgery Surgical Advisory Board (SAB) for a three year term from March 1, 2013 to February 29, 2016.

Herb Chen was appointed by the Biological Sciences Divisional Executive Committee to the University Academic Planning Council for a four-year term beginning with the 2013-2014 academic year. The University Academic Planning Council (UAPC) advises the provost on major academic program decisions, long-term academic plans, and related developments.

Carla Pugh was accepted as a Fellow in the 2013-2014 Class of the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program.

Hans Sollinger was selected as an editor for the Journal of Surgery (JSUR), an international, non profit, open access, peer reviewed journal that is being launched by Avens Publishing Group.
