Tim McCulloch, MD, learned that his PCORI grant “PRO-ACTIVE: Comparing the effectiveness of prophylactic swallow intervention for patients receiving radiotherapy for head and neck cancer,” was funded. The grant will be housed at Princess Margaret in Toronto. Written by a research team from Toronto, MD Anderson and Wisconsin, Drs. McCulloch and Cameron McDonald will be on the executive council, serve as local Principal Investigator for patients recurrent to the trial, and will be home of the U.S. stakeholder engagement panels. Congratulations to Gretchen Schwarze, MD, MPP, who was named a Cambia Health Foundation Sojourns Scholar. This leadership program invests in emerging leaders who are committed to improving access to, knowledge about, and quality of palliative care. Dr. Schwarze’s award includes support for her project “National dissemination a of communication tool to increase access to palliative care for surgical patients.” This two-year award began on October 1st.
Congratulations to members of the transplantation division who, led by Will Burlingham, PhD, hosted the 18th annual Great Lakes Transplantation Immunology Forum last week. This forum, which travels between institutions, is a platform for immunology researchers to share their work and collaborate.
Shout out to the Trauma Education and Assessment Methodology Research Group, who recently raised over $3,000 for the UW Carbone Cancer Center’s Race for Research 5K.
Jon Matsumura, MD, was a co-author on “Carotid Stent Fractures are not Associated with Adverse Events: Results from the ACT 1 Multicenter Randomized Trial,” published in Circulation on October 5, 2017.

Carla Pugh, MD, PhD, will serve as Marshal at the American College of Surgeons 2017 Convocation of the Initiates leading the new fellows into the Convocation Ceremony at the Clinical Congress. Congratulations to Dr. Pugh for being selected to this position of high honor.
