At the Top

Jon Matsumura and Girma Tefera, working with a large UW Health team, completed a live, high definition satellite broadcast of five operations over two days, to 2000 attendees of VIVA in Las Vegas. This type of activity serves to improve medical care through education of physicians in practice but also adds to UW Health image as a quaternary academic center of excellence. All patients are doing well. The calm, dedicated effort of professionals at all strata of the organization made this broadcast a huge success.

Professorships Awarded

Four faculty members recently received named professorships in the Department of Surgery. Dixon Kaufman is the Ray D. Owen Professor of Transplantation. Herb Chen is the Layton F. Rikkers, MD Endowed Professor in Surgical Leadership. Lee Wilke is the WARF Professor for the Advancement of Surgery and Caprice Greenberg is the WARF Professor for the Advancement of Surgical Outcomes. A celebration of all named chairs is being planned for the Department and for those donors outside the Department who made these chairs a reality.

Honors and Awards

Dr. Ben Marcus was invited to be an oral examiner for the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery board certification process.

Research Accomplishments

The Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) introduced a new “guide” for the care and use of laboratory animals in February 2011 and was recently at UW, reviewing labs and animal facilities under the new rules. Full accreditation of the SMPH program was recommended. Thanks to Devon Klipsic and Lynn Haynes for their leadership in preparing Department space.
