Archive: Welcome Dr. Dixon Kaufman, Chief of the Division of Transplantation

Dixon Kaufman, MD, PhD, FACS, has joined the University of Wisconsin Department of Surgery faculty as the new chief of the Division of Transplantation. Dr. Kaufman comes to Madison after many years of service at Northwestern University. He is nationally recognized for his clinical expertise, research and leadership in the field of transplant surgery and also in the development of cellular therapies for the treatment of diabetes. His clinical focus is kidney, pancreas and islet transplantation.

Dr. Kaufman’s research is concentrated on the development of islet transplantation for patients with diabetes. Specifically, he has pursued investigation into the immunobiology of islet transplantation, the development of noninvasive imaging modalities for identifying transplanted islets, and the development of novel biomaterials to enhance islet transplantation. He has a successful record of extramural NIH funding for this research and he is currently the principal investigator of the NIH-supported Clinical Islet Transplant Consortium Trial.

Dr. Kaufman joins a team of 10 expert transplant surgeons offering advanced treatments for end-stage organ failure in the nationally recognized program at UW Hospital and Clinics. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Kaufman to the University of Wisconsin.
