When icy sidewalks and snow-filled parks make a casual stroll difficult and potentially dangerous, the year-round Walk with a Doc program gets creative. During the winter months, hearty Madisonians strap on skis, ice skates and snowshoes to join doctors from UW Health for educational talks and physical activity. Last weekend, Dr. Hans Sollinger, Folkert O. Belzer Professor of Surgery and an expert skier, presented a short talk on “Diabetes and New Cures on the Horizon” then answered participants’ questions during a half-hour ski around Odana Hills Golf Course. Columbus, Ohio, cardiologist David Sabgir founded the Walk with a Doc movement in 2005 as a way to educate patients and get them moving. Since then, Walk with a Doc programs have spread nationwide.
The Madison-area Walk with a Doc is a joint program sponsored by UW Health and Madison Parks.
