Visiting Senior Medical Student Electives

Visiting medical student electives/externships for senior medical students interested in Otolaryngology are encouraged and generally occur between July and November of the senior year. These rotations last four weeks and are competitively approved and arranged directly by a faculty committee within the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery. We are still waiting for the final elective dates for 2025-2026 Match Season from our medical school, but below are the likely rotation dates:

7/7-8/1/2025

8/4-8/29/2025

9/2-9/26/2025

9/29-10/24/2025

10/27-11/21/2025

Applications for visiting students will open on January 1, 2025 and will close on March 31, 2025. Interested students should submit the following items to UMESurgEd@surgery.wisc.edu as their application materials:

• Current CV
• Personal Statement

Our faculty committee will review all applications and will notify visiting medical students of their status by mid-April. Following committee review and approval, the applicant will need to visit the Medical Student Electives website and follow the process to apply through VSLO (usually opens late April/early May). Upon completion of these criteria you will be allowed to formally apply and be approved to visit the School of Medicine and Public Health and Department of Otolaryngology. Until this process is completed, the elective as approved first by the Department cannot be confirmed and “official.”

Visiting students may apply after the March 31, 2025 deadline, but may not receive acceptance of their visiting rotation pending availability/space.

Medical students who are underrepresented in surgery and interested in pursuing a career in Otolaryngology are encouraged to apply for the Underrepresented in Medicine (URiM) Visiting Elective Scholarship. Applications received before May 1^st are given priority.
