
Kyle Bushaw, MA
Researcher II
Kyle Bushaw is a health services researcher at the Wisconsin Surgical Outcomes Research Program (WiSOR) with a background in sociology and expertise in both quantitative and qualitative research methods. He earned his Master of Arts in Sociology from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in 2017.
Kyle currently works with Dr. Gretchen Schwarze, providing research support and project management for multi-site NIH-funded clinical trials and other research projects. These studies focus on improving surgical decision-making and communication, including:
- Best Case/Worst Case: A scenario-based communication tool designed to help patients and families understand the range of possible outcomes of surgical treatment options.
- Fundamentals of Communication in Surgery (FCS): A longitudinal curriculum for surgical trainees that builds core communication skills and supports ethical decision-making in complex clinical situations.
- Better Conversations for Better Informed Consent: An intervention aimed at reframing informed consent discussions to clarify surgical goals, present potential downsides, and foster meaningful deliberation with patients.
