Graduate Medical Education

GME Program Manager
Mallory oversees fourteen Graduate Medical Education training programs within the Department of Surgery. While leading and managing the residency coordinators, Mallory ensures the ongoing accreditation and success of the training programs. This position plays a central role in the standardization of policies, processes, and procedures across all departmental training programs.
“Providing a comprehensive training life-cycle for residents and fellows allows the University of Wisconsin to recruit, train and graduate some of the best surgeons. The ability to ensure a streamlined process from recruitment through graduation, and everything in between, is rewarding. I am grateful to be in a role that allows me to guide the direction of our training programs towards continued success.”

General Surgery

Vascular & Cardiothoracic Surgery
“I am truly passionate about building relationships with my residents and aiding in their growth and development – not just as a physician and learner, but as a human being. There is so much emphasis on technology and technical skills in medicine (and for good reason), but I feel there is equal value in developing soft skills by employing a more humanistic approach to character development. My ultimate goal is to help residents learn and have successful and fulfilling careers long-term.”
– Dana Gilbertson
“I have a passion for working with learners and helping them attain their personal and professional goals. I was drawn to Medical Education because of the positive impact our learners have on the communities they serve after they graduate.”
– Angie Badura

Plastic Surgery

Otolaryngology
“I’ve always enjoyed helping people but I am pretty sure I wouldn’t be good with blood in the OR. My goal in my role is to help ensure residents are getting the best education possible so they can become well-rounded, competent surgeons. If my help running or developing a course to teach them a procedure helps them in that process, then I’ve done my job. This is not a job that I knew about when I was a kid, but I really love watching the residents learn and grow.”
– Alyssa Schappe
“The impact that Medical Education has on not only the direct learners, but also on those that the learners come in contact with later drives my passion for working in this field. I enjoy helping others attain their goals and strive to streamline and develop processes to aid residents and faculty.”
– Sarah Hays

“It is a personal goal of mine to create meaningful learning opportunities and environments that are equitable and sustainable for all students. In my work, I believe that effective teaching and communication is an intersection of art and science and should be articulated as such – which is why I am so grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with our department faculty as our perspectives organically bring these elements to the table in our developments. I lean on the foundations of servant leadership, collaborative power dynamics, and technological innovation towards shaping my work and reaching my goals of leveraging student success. I am appreciative to our amazing educators within the department and for the faculty leaders who give me the opportunity to apply my passions into helping shape the future generations of medical professionals – serving as a complement to their breadth of knowledge and expertise.”
