The Department of Surgery is pleased to welcome Dr. Nabeel Zafar as Assistant Professor (CHS) in the Division of Surgical Oncology. Dr. Zafar will be joining active peritoneal surface malignancy, hepatopancreatobiliary, and GI oncology programs, as well as participating in GI Surgical Oncology and general surgery calls.
Dr. Zafar brings a diversity of experience to his position, having served as an instructor in the Department of Surgery at Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi, Pakistan, and as a clinical specialist in the Department of Surgical Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. After earning a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (equivalent to U.S. MD) at Aga Khan University Medical College and a Master of Public Health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts, he completed a general surgery residency at Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC, and a fellowship in advanced GI and minimally invasive surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. Most recently, he completed a clinical fellowship in complex general surgical oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center.
The Department of Surgery eagerly anticipates Dr. Zafar leading the division’s global oncology initiatives in partnership with the Carbone Cancer Center and other multidisciplinary collaborators. For his part, Dr. Zafar believes Wisconsin Surgery offers a “unique opportunity to not only provide excellent care as an academic surgical oncologist but to also make a substantial impact on improving cancer surgery around the world.”
