Dr. Rebecca Minter Elected as Vice Chair of the American Board of Surgery

Rebecca M. Minter, MD, MBA

Dr. Rebecca Minter, A.R. Curreri Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery, was recently elected as the vice chair of the American Board of Surgery (ABS) for the 2024-25 term. The vice chair serves as a part of the ABS Board of Directors and is in line to assume the role of Chair the following year if approved by the nominating committee and full ABS BOD. This group determines and advances the ABS mission, strategy, and policies, and ensures the value of ABS certification.

“I am deeply honored by the opportunity to continue to serve the ABS Board of Directors, the House of Surgery and the public in this new role, alongside my esteemed colleagues,” Dr. Minter said. “It is a true privilege to serve an organization guided by a clear north star focused on improving surgical care through rigorous, innovative and progressive assessment practices. I am excited to see what is ahead!”

Dr. Minter was first nominated to the ABS Board of Directors (now the ABS Council) by the American Surgical Association in 2018. The following year she was elected to the new governing board of the ABS, which is now known as the ABS Board of Directors.

The American Board of Surgery is an independent, nonprofit organization that provides board certification to individuals who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge in the field of surgery. Surgeons certified by the ABS have completed at least five years of residency training following medical school, met all ABS training requirements, and successfully completed the ABS examination process. The ABS offers board certification in surgery (general surgery), vascular surgery, pediatric surgery, surgical critical care, complex general surgical oncology, and hand surgery.
