Kristin Long, MD, Associate Professor in the Division of Endocrine Surgery, was recently selected as the 2023-24 Society of University Surgeons (SUS) Global Surgery Scholar Award winner. This highly competitive award gives SUS members involved in Academic Global Surgery the opportunity to serve as a Visiting Grand Rounds Speaker at hosting U.S. academic institutions. Only one academic global surgery scholar is selected each year. The winner receives recognition as the SUS Global Surgery Scholar and a $500 stipend.
In May, Dr. Long will be giving her Visiting Grand Rounds presentation at Stanford University, where she plans to discuss the successes and challenges of virtual collaboration in international partnerships.
“I think that we have learned a tremendous amount about how to optimize virtual/hybrid work and teaching over the last few years,” Dr. Long said. “Academic global surgery efforts truly highlight both the best-practice uses of virtual engagement but also the significant struggles of technology to mimic real-life interactions and relationship-building, which is critical to our long-term successes.”
This presentation will include examples of site-specific collaborations as well as a look at broader endeavors such as the virtual and hybrid board examinations given by the College of Surgeons of Eastern, Central, and Southern Africa.
