As Global Health Director, I have been active in enhancing the local care of patients with urologic issues in Beirut, Lebanon. I recently traveled to Lebanon to provide clinical care at American University of Beruit, Medical Center. I was there from June 12-19, 2024.
I am originally from Lebanon and trained under the esteemed Dr. Kamal Hemady. I have dedicated my efforts to improving pediatric urological care in my homeland. In a significant development, I have collaborated closely with Dr. Hemady’s family and children to secure essential startup funding for treating children with urological anomalies and conditions at the American University of Beirut, my alma mater. The Hemady family has been instrumental in making this fund a reality. Without their commitment and support this effort would not have succeeded.
Pediatric urology care encompasses a wide range of congenital anomalies. Unfortunately, children with pediatric urological anomalies often face stigmatization due to urinary or genital conditions. Dr. Hemady’s enduring belief that all children deserve the best care aligns with the mission of this initiative, which aims to provide prompt and effective treatment to those in need. This funding marks a significant step towards ensuring that children in Beirut receive the specialized care they deserve. Myself and the entire team are committed to making a positive impact on the lives of these young patients and their families. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of these children and provide them with the best possible care.
Dr. Walid Farhat is a Professor in the Department of Urology.
