Dr. Margaret “Gretchen” Schwarze, Professor in the Division of Vascular Surgery, was recently named a 2024 Hastings Center Fellow. Hastings Center Fellows are an elected group of individuals of outstanding accomplishment whose work has informed scholarship and/or public understanding of complex ethical issues in health, health care, life sciences research, and the environment.

“I am excited about this fellowship,” Dr. Schwarze said. “The Hastings Center is a world-renowned bioethics institution.”

Dr. Schwarze directs the hospital ethics committee. In addition, her research interests focus on informed consent, high-stakes decisions, and end-of-life care for older patients with complex illnesses. She leads The Patient Preferences Project, which helps older patients who are considering major surgery make decisions that are in line with their values, goals and preferences.

The Hastings Center addresses social and ethical issues in health care, science and technology. Hasting Center scholars conduct original research on ethical issues in health, science, and technology, informing policy and practice.
