Dr. Sharon Weber, professor and Chair of the Division of Surgical Oncology, was recognized as an Exceptional Woman in Medicine by Castle Connolly.
The Exceptional Women in Medicine awardees are recognized annually, based on peer nominations and outstanding accomplishments and dedication to the field of medicine. These women have contributed to the advancement of healthcare through clinical care, research, community service, education and/or leadership.
“I’m incredibly grateful to be recognized as a 2026 Exceptional Woman in Medicine,” Dr. Weber said. “I am forever grateful for the mentors who shaped me and the patients who trust me with their health every day. It is a joy to do this work alongside so many remarkable physicians and colleagues. It is a privilege to be part of this incredible group of female physicians nationwide.”
Dr. Weber completed her general surgery residency at the University of Wisconsin and then went on to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, where she completed fellowships in Surgical Oncology and Hepatobiliary. She returned to Madison in 2001 as an assistant professor. Dr. Weber was promoted to full professor and received tenure in 2012, becoming the first tenured female surgeon in the Division of General Surgery and only the second tenured female surgeon in the Wisconsin Department of Surgery.
