We are closely following AAMC and UWSMPH guidelines for visiting rotations for this academic year. In the event that AAMC or UWSMPH recommends that visiting rotations should occur this academic year, we will follow their guidelines to ensure everyone’s safety.
Visiting medical student electives/extern-ships for senior medical students interested in General Surgery Residency training are encouraged, and generally occur between July and December of the senior year. These rotations last four weeks, and are competitively approved and arranged directly with our General Surgery faculty.
Interested students should submit the following documents to Sarah Larson at larsonsa@surgery.wisc.edu.
- Current CV
- Letter of Interest
- Available USMLE scores
Medical students who are underrepresented in surgery and interested in pursuing a career in General Surgery are encouraged to apply for the Underrepresented in Medicine Visiting Elective Scholarship. Applications received before June 1 are given priority.
Following approval from the Division of General Surgery, the applicant will need to visit the UWSMPH Medical Student Electives website and complete in its entirety the process outlined. Upon completion of these criteria you will be allowed to formally apply and be approved to visit the School of Medicine and Public Health and Department of Surgery. (Until this process is complete, the elective as approved first by our faculty cannot be confirmed and “official”.)
We look forward to meeting and working with you.
