DOS Transplantation Faculty, Researcher and Lab Trainees Attend the World Transplant Congress

The 2025 World Transplant Congress (WTC) took place in San Francisco from Aug. 2-6. The theme of this year’s congress was “Discover the Future of Organ Transplantation” with key topics including surgical techniques and donor management, immunological research and patient care. Drs. David Foley, Dixon Kaufman, Jon Odorico, Jennifer Philip, and Carrie Thiessen, faculty members in the Division of Transplantation, Angela Gifford, a researcher in Dr. Thiessen’s lab, and three lab trainees from Dr. Thiessen’s lab represented Wisconsin Surgery at the WTC.

At the congress, Drs. Foley, Kaufman, Odorico, Philip, Thiessen and the trainees from Dr. Thiessen’s Lab all gave oral presentations that covered a wide variety of transplantation topics. In addition, Drs. Odorico, Thiessen, and researcher Angela Gifford gave poster presentations in sessions about the pancreas, kidney, and pharmacy. The WTC also gave people an opportunity to connect and engage with the diverse community of professionals in the transplant field.

The American Society of Transplantation (AST) also announced its 2025-26 Board of Directors election results during the congress and Dr. Foley was named President of AST.

The World Transplant Congress is a significant event in the field of organ transplantation, organized jointly by the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS), the American Society of Transplantation (AST) and the Transplantation Society (TTS). The event serves as a platform for experts from around the globe to meet and share research, discuss advancements, and address challenges in organ transplantation.
