Welcome Dr. Sameer Hirji to the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery

Sameer Hirji, MD, MPH is an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery and Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Dr. Hirji will be based primarily at University Hospital.

He is a board-certified adult cardiac surgeon whose practice centers on complex aortic surgery, valvular and structural heart disease, and hybrid and transcatheter approaches to cardiac care. In addition to developing a clinically robust, broad-based adult cardiac surgery practice, Dr. Hirji will also focus on building a cardiac surgery clinical outcomes research program. He will be a part of the Wisconsin Surgical Outcomes Research (WiSOR) Program. Dr. Hirji will also be responsible for teaching medical students, residents, and fellows within the context of his practice.

Dr. Hirji completed a general surgery residency and cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, followed by the Thoracic Surgery Foundation Michael J. Davidson Advanced Structural Heart and Transcatheter Fellowship and an Advanced Aortic and Endovascular Surgery Fellowship, also at the Brigham. Prior to that, Dr. Hirji earned his undergraduate degree in biological engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine.

He additionally holds a Master of Public Health in Clinical Effectiveness from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Dr. Hirji has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed publications and has received national recognition including the J. Maxwell Chamberlain, C. Walton Lillehei, Richard Clark, and Joseph Murray awards from the STS, AATS, and ACC. He was the past President of the Thoracic Surgery Residents Association. He was also recently named to Cardiovascular Business’ 40 Under 40.
