The latest Blue Ridge rankings for the 2024 federal fiscal year (ending on Sept. 30, 2024) were released in March and the Wisconsin Department of Surgery ranked 12th nationally with $14,106,215 in awards. That marks the seventh consecutive year that UW has surpassed $12 million in federal funding, making it one of just six departments of surgery that can make that claim.
Wisconsin Surgery has placed among the top 25 in the Blue Ridge rankings every year since its inception in 2006 and has ranked among the top 15 since 2010. Only four other surgery departments have a streak of top 15 placements that long.
Over the last 10 years the Wisconsin Department of Surgery has been awarded $131,290,613 in funding from the National Institutes of Health. According to the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research that ranks seventh nationally among academic surgery departments during that time frame.
“We take tremendous pride in our incredible history of research success at Wisconsin Surgery,” said Rebecca Minter, MD, A.R. Curreri Distinguished Chair of the Department of Surgery. “Our collaborative efforts, both within the department and also among the larger campus community, drive innovation that ultimately leads to better outcomes for our patients. I’d like to commend our research teams’ dedication and hard work and I am grateful for all who contribute to our collective success.
“This funding from the NIH is critical in bolstering our ability to explore the next discoveries that will help us achieve our mission of alleviating human suffering and promoting healing through innovation, education and compassionate care. There are countless examples of the real-world impact of the research happening in our department improving the quality of life of our patients and we are determined to ensure that continues.”
NIH funding is obtained through the cooperative work of hundreds of Wisconsin Surgery personnel, including researchers such as scientists, faculty, residents, post-doctoral trainees, and students, as well as contributors such as grant writers and editors, research administrators, grant managers, and more.
