Muhammed Murtaza, MBBS, PhD, Associate Professor in the Division of Surgical Oncology, was named the Director of the Center for Human Genomics and Precision Medicine (CHGPM). His appointment began on June 30, 2024.
Dr. Murtaza joined the Department of Surgery in 2020 to serve as leader of the Novel Diagnostics Program in the CHGPM. In 2021, he was appointed the associate director of the center. As associate director, Dr. Murtaza has been instrumental in fostering community and collaboration among its scientists and developing the infrastructure of human genomics and precision medicine research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has an impressive record of success as a leader, mentor, and researcher. His translational and highly interdisciplinary work focuses on the gaps that exist between diagnostic needs in the clinical management of cancer, and the opportunities arising from rapid advances in genomics that can help address those needs for the benefit of cancer patients.
The Center for Human Genomics and Precision Medicine at UW-Madison became operational in 2018. Its mission is to catalyze research, clinical, and educational activities in human genomics and precision medicine; grow and nurture the UW human genomics and precision medicine community; and bring the benefits of precision medicine to all Wisconsinites.
