The Department of Surgery recently named Dr. Kristin Long, Associate Professor in the Division of Endocrine Surgery, Vice Chair of Global Surgery. She assumed the role on Nov. 1.
“It’s truly an honor to follow in the footsteps of my global surgery mentor, Dr. Girma Tefera, and assume the role of Vice Chair,” Dr. Long said. “His legacy in the field is immeasurable, and I am so excited to continue building strong, sustainable partnerships in surgery around the world! The Department has a wonderful history of supporting global surgery and I’m excited to look towards the future.”
Dr. Tefera, Professor in the Division of Vascular Surgery, served as the inaugural Vice Chair of Global Surgery in the Department of Surgery. During his tenure, he established impactful and sustaining relationships in low- and middle-income countries, and worked to establish a programmatic approach within the department as well as the American College of Surgeons (ACS), where he leads ACS HOPE.
“Dr. Long has a long-standing commitment to Global Surgery and serves in a leadership capacity in many associations and global teams focused on this work,” said Dr. Rebecca Minter, A.R. Curreri Distinguished Chair of the Department of Surgery. “She is on the advisory council for our own UW-Madison Institute for Global Health as well. Dr. Long will be an outstanding leader in this space, and will continue to partner with Dr. Tefera and many colleagues in the Department of Surgery who are dedicated to this important global work.”
