UW Department of Surgery Strategic Plan: Competency-Based Education 2020-2025
In early 2019, the Administrative Council of the Department of Surgery-University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health launched its strategic planning initiative. The Council identified four key domains within the department and developed goals and action-oriented tactics for each, to begin work toward a vision for the UW Department of Surgery to become the premier academic surgical department in North America.
Competency-Based Education was identified as one of the domains, and with it an assigned objective of establishing the Department as an international leader in the development of competency-based training paradigms for surgery. To achieve this objective, five Education Project Teams have been created within the domain, each charged with structuring how their team will function, developing metrics to track their progress, and establishing 1- to 5-year goals while keeping in mind the goals may need to evolve and change throughout that time.
